CHI-Squared Test of Independence
نویسنده
چکیده
Chi-square (X) test is a nonparametric statistical analyzing method often used in experimental work where the data consist in frequencies or ‘counts’ – for example the number of boys and girls in a class having their tonsils out – as distinct from quantitative data obtained from measurement of continuous variables such as temperature, height, and so on. The most common use of the test is to assess the probability of association or independence of facts [3]. This paper summarizes the chi-squared test. Beginning from the basics it discusses with descriptive examples on where and how to apply this test. The purpose of the paper is to present a quick overview on chi-square test, so that one who doesn’t have much knowledge on statistics may use it as a beginner’s guide.

Fisher’s exact approach for post hoc analysis of a chi-squared test
This research is motivated by one of our survey studies to assess the potential influence of introducing zebra mussels to the Lake Mead National Recreation Area, Nevada. One research question in this study is to investigate the association between the boating activity type and the awareness of zebra mussels. A chi-squared test is often used for testing independence between two factors with nomi...
متن کاملThe Limiting Distribution of a Test for Multivariate Structure
We define a chi-squared statistic for p-dimensional data as follows. First, we transform the data to remove the correlations between the p variables. Then we discretize each variable into groups of equal size and compute the cell counts in the resulting p-way contingency table. Our statistic is just the usual chi-squared statistic for testing independence in a contingency table. Because the cel...
متن کاملTradeoff Between No-Call Reduction in Genotyping Error Rate and Loss of Sample Size for Genetic Case/Control Association Studies
Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) may be genotyped for use in case-control designs to test for association between a SNP marker and a disease using a 2 x 3 chi-squared test of independence. Genotyping is often based on underlying continuous measurements, which are classified into genotypes. A "no-call" procedure is sometimes used in which borderline observations are not classified. This pro...
متن کاملDifferentially Private Chi-Squared Hypothesis Testing: Goodness of Fit and Independence Testing
Hypothesis testing is a useful statistical tool in determining whether a given model should be rejected based on a sample from the population. Sample data may contain sensitive information about individuals, such as medical information. Thus it is important to design statistical tests that guarantee the privacy of subjects in the data. In this work, we study hypothesis testing subject to differ...
متن کاملIndependence in Multi-Way Contingency Tables: S. N. Roy’s Breakthroughs and Later Developments
In the mid 1950s S. N. Roy and his students contributed two landmark articles to the contingency table literature (Roy and Kastenbaum 1956, Roy and Mitra 1956). The first article generalized concepts of interaction from 2×2×2 contingency tables to three-way tables of arbitrary size and to larger tables. In the second article, which is the source of our primary focus, various notions of independ...
